IRCTC to roll out QR-coded uniforms for staff on Mumbai long-distance trains to curb overcharging

The Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) will introduce uniforms with quick response (QR) codes on badges for staff on long-distance trains, enabling passengers to view menus and make payments digitally. The initiative, aimed at curbing complaints of overcharging by onboard vendors, will begin on Mumbai-based trains.

"Passengers can scan the QR codes to check the latest menu and make payments through official channels. This system will be operational during the Christmas and New Year vacation," IRCTC Group General Manager Gaurav Jha told mid-day.com.

Premier trains such as Vande Bharat and Rajdhani will have staff wearing navy blue jackets with the helpline number stitched on them, while staff on other trains will wear light blue t-shirts. IRCTC will also issue ID cards with QR codes, which staff must wear while working onboard.

The uniform will display menu information and official food rates on one side, and provide digital payment facilities on the other. IRCTC is coordinating with Central and Western Railways to implement the plan on trains departing from Mumbai.
