Five people were injured and 40 two-wheelers were destroyed after a massive fire broke out at a building in Dombivli area of Thane district in Maharashtra, officials said, reported the PTI.
According to civic officials, a fire broke out in the basement of a residential building in Thane district in the early hours of Sunday. The incident took place in the Sagaon area of Dombivli town at around 4 am.
The blaze started in the basement parking area of the building.
Namdeo Chowdhary, chief fire officer of the Kalyan Dombivli Municipal Corporation, a woman suffered burn injuries in the fire. A man was injured after he jumped from a first-floor flat to escape the flames. Three other residents sustained minor injuries. All five injured persons lived on the first floor of the building. They have been admitted to a nearby hospital and are receiving treatment, as per the PTI.
Officials said at least 40 two-wheelers parked in the basement were gutted in the blaze. The fire caused heavy damage to the parking area.
Two fire engines were sent to the spot for firefighting operations shortly after the fire was reported. Firefighters managed to bring the blaze under control within an hour.
Officials said that the authorities were probing the exact cause of the blaze which was yet been determined.
An investigation is expected to find out how the blaze started, they said.
Meanwhile, in an another incident, a fire broke out at a paint manufacturing unit in the Vasai East area near Mumbai on Friday, PTI reported.
The blaze broke out around 10.30 am at the factory in Aisha Compound, which houses several industrial units. Thick plumes of smoke and flames rising high into the air were visible from a distance, they added.
"Upon receiving information, our teams reached the site with three fire engines. The fire had intensified due to the presence of materials needed to make paint and other highly flammable substances inside the factory," said a fire official from the Vasai Virar Municipal Corporation, the news agency reported.
The fire was later brought under control.
Though no injuries were reported, property worth several lakhs of rupees appears to have been gutted in the blaze, he added, noting that the exact cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained.
