Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Tuesday reviewed a proposal to develop land owned by the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) on a public-private partnership (PPP) basis, with a focus on modernising bus depots and improving passenger amenities.
A special review meeting was held at Sahyadri Guest House in Mumbai to discuss the development of MSRTC properties.
Shinde directed officials to ensure that new bus depots and other structures developed on the corporation's land are equipped with modern facilities and have an "iconic" design that enhances the city's appearance.
He also stressed the need to ensure convenient and passenger-friendly facilities at the redeveloped sites.
"While developing the lands of the ST Corporation, which serves as the lifeline of Maharashtra, through public-private partnerships, the new bus depots and other structures to be constructed there should not only be equipped with modern facilities but also be âiconic' and add to the city's beauty, and citizens should also receive convenient facilities," Shinde said in a statement.
According to Shinde, 147 MSRTC bus depots and properties will be taken up for development under the PPP model in the first phase.
The proposed projects will include modern bus ports, passenger amenities, offices, hospitals, cinema halls and citizen service centres, among other facilities.
The plan also includes installing solar energy systems, electric vehicle charging stations and dedicated charging infrastructure for MSRTC's electric buses.
Shinde said the development would help provide passengers with safer, high-quality and modern facilities while ensuring that MSRTC makes better and more systematic use of its properties to strengthen its financial position.
He added that the integration of renewable energy and electric vehicle infrastructure would help reduce energy costs and carbon emissions.
Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik, Transport Department Additional Chief Secretary Sethi, Additional Chief Secretary in the Deputy Chief Minister's Office Aseem Gupta, Chief Minister's Principal Secretary Naveen Sona and other senior officials attended the meeting.
The proposed redevelopment is aimed at transforming MSRTC properties into modern transport hubs while creating additional revenue streams for the cash-strapped corporation and improving services for commuters across Maharashtra.
