The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast an increase in rainfall activity across Maharashtra between July 3 and July 7, warning of heavy to extremely heavy showers in several regions of the state.
According to the latest weather bulletin, an offshore trough extending from Maharashtra to the Karnataka coast, a low-pressure area over the northwest Bay of Bengal, and an active shear zone around 21 degrees North are driving the intensified monsoon conditions over the region.
Under the influence of these systems, the IMD has predicted widespread rainfall activity over Konkan and adjoining ghat areas of Madhya Maharashtra, with heavy to very heavy rainfall at several places and extremely heavy rainfall at isolated locations during the forecast period.
Thunderstorms accompanied by moderate to heavy rainfall are also very likely at isolated places in Madhya Maharashtra and Marathwada, while Vidarbha is expected to witness thunderstorms with heavy to very heavy rainfall between July 3 and 7.
The IMD has issued advisories for fishermen along the North Maharashtra coast and South Maharashtra-Goa coast, warning of squally weather conditions with wind speeds ranging from 40-50 kmph, gusting up to 65 kmph during the forecast period. Fishermen have been strictly advised not to venture into the sea.
Local Cautionary Signal No III has been hoisted at ports from Dahanu to Shrivardhan on the North Maharashtra coast and from Bankot to Marmagao on the South Maharashtra-Goa coast, indicating rough sea conditions and heightened maritime risk.
The IMD has also warned of possible flash floods, localised inundation in low-lying and urban areas, disruption of transport services, and damage to crops, weak structures, and infrastructure.
Authorities have cautioned about potential landslides, mudslides, and rockfalls in vulnerable regions, along with the risk of lightning strikes during thunderstorms. Citizens have been advised to avoid low-lying areas, fragile terrain, and open fields during thunderstorm activity.
The department has urged state authorities and disaster management agencies to remain on alert and take necessary precautionary measures to ensure public safety.
