The Election Commission of India (ECI) has revised the schedule for the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Maharashtra.
ECI on Friday announced the deadline extension for filing claims and objections and postponing the final publication of the electoral roll to November 30, 2026.
In an official communication dated October 29, addressed to the Chief Electoral Officer of Maharashtra, the Election Commission announced changes to the schedule for the SIR, with October 1, 2026, as the qualifying date.
As per the revised schedule, the period for filing claims and objections, which began on August 31, will now continue until November 13, 2026.
The notice phase and disposal of claims and objections will continue until November 25, 2026. The final publication of the electoral roll, which was earlier scheduled for a different date, has now been fixed for November 30, 2026.
The revised schedule follows a request from the Maharashtra Chief Electoral Officer through a letter dated October 29, 2026. The Election Commission stated that it had considered the request and decided to revise the existing timeline.
The communication, issued by Under Secretary Sandeep Kumar, also directed the Maharashtra Chief Electoral Officer to ensure that the revised schedule is published in an extraordinary issue of the State Gazette immediately. The state has also been asked to undertake wide publicity of the revised schedule.
The latest revision is expected to provide additional time for the claims and objections process before the final electoral roll is published.
Earlier on October 19, a Mumbai Congress delegation met Maharashtra Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) S Chockalingam on Monday and raised concerns over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, alleging that the process was cumbersome and could lead to eligible voters being excluded, reported the PTI.
Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Mumbai Congress president Varsha Gaikwad alleged irregularities in the exercise and demanded strict action against those found deliberately deleting voters' names to benefit the ruling party.
Gaikwad said the party had submitted evidence of alleged irregularities to the CEO.
She shared the details of meeting in a post on X after meeting Chockalingam.
According to her, Chockalingam assured the delegation that strict action would be taken against those found responsible for deliberate deletions.
