Barely a week after setting the NEET paper leak right by conducting a retest, the government has another controversy on its hands with a similar leak in the Maharashtra Teachers Eligibility Test or MahaTET. Just a day before the exam was to take place, it was called off on Saturday after three people were found in possession of the question paper in Bhiwandi.

Within hours, CM Devendra Fadnavis ordered an SIT probe into the matter, even as social media erupted with furore over the incident. "It was found that some questions in the TET June 2026 question paper were found to be the same with the said people, and a case has been registered at the Bhiwandi Police Station.

Considering the above situation, TET is being postponed," stated a circular from the Maharashtra State Examination Council. Meanwhile, the examination body has also issued an advisory against a fake letter circulating on social media, claiming that the next MahaTET is scheduled for July 6.

Aspirants despondent

Yuvraj Kalshetti, a candidate from Virar, told Sunday mid-day that both students and teachers had to face a lot of shocks this year. "First we saw our NEET students face this shocker [paper leak], now it's us. Many in-service teachers were to take this test after great strain, and now the exam is postponed. The new academic year has already started and it will only get more stressful to prepare for the retest," he said.

Another candidate from Palghar, Ameen Sayyed, said that teachers were already mentally strained as preparation for the exam was tough this year, due to changes in the syllabus, as well as simultaneous census duties for teachers. "I prepared for this test amid SIR and BLO duties, then I suddenly got a call from my peers this morning to check the group. If this repeatedly happens with competitive exams in our country, we are bound to lose faith," he told Sunday mid-day.

‘Conduct online test'

Teacher groups across the state are calling for the TET to go online, as a Computer-Based Test to protect the integrity of the exam, an approach similar to the upcoming NEETs.

"The Maharashtra Progressive Teachers' Association had demanded as early as May 23, that TET should be conducted online to ensure the integrity, security, and reliability of the TET examination," said Tanaji Kamble, the association head.
