The Maharashtra government is planning to substantially increase the number of vacancies to be filled through the Maharashtra Public Service Commission (MPSC), with Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis saying the next recruitment could surpass previous records, reported the PTI.
Speaking to reporters after a state Cabinet meeting on Tuesday, CM Fadnavis said the government was working to increase the number of posts available through the MPSC, particularly in Group C.
Five departments made presentations on vacant posts during the Cabinet meeting, he said.
"I am confident that for the next examination, we will bring in such a large number of posts that all previous records will be broken," Fadnavis said, the news agency reported.
CM Fadnavis also said the government would consider restoring the objective examination pattern for MPSC examinations if recommended by a high-powered committee examining reforms to the commission.
The committee has been holding discussions with students and other stakeholders on changes to the examination system.
According to Fadnavis, there has been a strong demand during these discussions to restore the objective pattern for examinations including State Services, Agriculture, Food Safety Officer (FSO) and Engineering services, the news agency reported.
He said the committee was listening to students and other stakeholders and that some hearings had lasted six to eight hours.
Fadnavis said the earlier Dalvi Committee had recommended shifting from the objective pattern to the descriptive format, following which the government and MPSC decided to implement the change.
However, he said the demand for returning to the objective pattern had emerged strongly during the latest consultations, particularly from student representatives.
"If the committee recommends that we should move from the descriptive pattern back to the objective pattern, or suggests any other changes, the government will be positive about accepting them," Fadnavis said, according to the PTI.
The government will take a final decision after receiving the committee's report, he added.
The government is also examining whether vacant posts in local self-government institutions can be filled through a separate mechanism, either through the MPSC or another system.
Fadnavis said the issue would also be discussed with the committee before a final decision is taken.
The government had constituted the Examination Reform Committee to recommend measures to improve the functioning of the MPSC.
According to the PTI, committee chairperson V Radha said on Monday that the panel had received more than 20,000 emails containing suggestions from candidates and other stakeholders.
The suggestions include greater transparency in the evaluation of answer papers and a fixed calendar for examinations and results.
The committee is also examining standard operating procedures for question-paper distribution and the conduct of competitive examinations, along with clear norms for the normalisation of marks.
It will also consider the procedure to be followed if an examination needs to be cancelled and measures to protect candidates who have already been selected, the news agency reported.
