The resident doctors of JJ Hospital were upset at being stopped at an anti-drink and drive nakabandi at Tardeo

Three resident doctors from JJ Hospital created a scene at a traffic junction on Sunday night when traffic police halted them. The doctors, under the influence of alcohol, allegedly abused and threatened the constables on duty near Sobo central mall.

They were escorted to Tardeo police station and arrested. The accused were identified as Ved Ravesh (28), Rahul Jain (28) and Shiv Mahideru (26), all resident doctors at the JJ hospital in Byculla.

A police officer added that Constable Sakharam Sonavne, Tardeo traffic police, and his colleagues nabbed the trio around 2 am. They were on bandobast duty near Sobo central mall. "We were conducting an anti-drink and drive campaign in the area," said Sonavne in his statement. "A four-wheeler came in our direction from Haji Ali Junction.

Like others, the car was stopped and the driver was asked to park the vehicle by the roadside. Instead of cooperating, the three people sitting inside the car started abusing us." Sonavane added, when one of them was asked to undergo the breathalyser test, he said, "I am drunk, do whatever you want to do" and continued abusing the on-duty cops.

"It didn't stop there. After exiting the car, all three started pushing the cops and even grabbed their collars. Realising that the situation was getting out of hand, we called for back up. All three were detained and taken to the Tardeo police station," said a police officer. However, the drama continued inside the police station as well, where the trio kept abusing the officers.

Cop speak
An officer from Tardeo police station said, "One of the doctors picked up a pen-like object that is used to punch holes in papers and started banging it on the table. Realising that it could hurt someone, an officer overpowered the doctor and snatched it from his hand. One of them threatened us by saying, ‘I have lot of power, you cops do whatever you want to do'."

A police officer said, "All the three were charged under Sections 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty), 332 (voluntarily causing hurt to deter public servant from his duty), 323 (punishment for voluntarily causing hurt), 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace), 506 (punishment for criminal intimidation) and 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) of Indian Penal Code and arrested at 4.15 am. They were produced in court and were remanded in police custody till October 19."
