A 12-year-old boy died after allegedly falling into an elevator shaft from the 10th floor of Shamim Tower in Mumbai's Nehru Nagar area, according to local residents.

The incident occurred when the child was reportedly playing hide-and-seek with other children inside the residential building. Residents said the child was hiding near the elevator area and was leaning against the doors when they suddenly opened, causing the fall.

According to a neighbour, the child fell from the 10th floor to the third floor and died following the incident.

Residents claim elevator had issues for months

Local residents alleged that the building's elevator had been facing technical problems for several months before the incident.

"There has been a persistent issue with the elevator here. It's not a new problem; it's been going on for about seven months. The elevator never really functions properly. The power was out on our floor, so it was dark," the neighbour told ANI.

The resident said children in the building would often hide near the elevator area while playing.

"While playing hide-and-seek, the children would often hide in the corners near the elevator. The other children said he was hiding in the corner by the elevator and leaning against it when the doors suddenly opened. He fell from the 10th floor to the third floor. The boy had passed away," the neighbour added.

Authorities examine circumstances surrounding incident

The incident has raised concerns among residents over elevator safety and regular maintenance checks in residential buildings.

Authorities are expected to examine the circumstances that led to the accident, including allegations made by residents about the elevator's condition. Further details regarding the investigation are awaited.

Six killed after structure collapses in Mankhurd

In another rain-related incident, at least six people died after two to three shanties housed within a ground-plus-three structure collapsed in Mumbai's Janata Nagar area of Mankhurd on Sunday evening, according to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).

The collapse occurred as heavy rainfall continued to affect Mumbai and its suburbs over the past several days.

According to Mumbai Police, the incident was reported around 8:30 pm in the Mandala area, which falls under the jurisdiction of Mankhurd Police Station.

Rescue operation launched after building collapse

Officials said a neighbouring structure reportedly collapsed onto the shanties, leaving several people trapped under the debris.

Emergency teams launched rescue operations at the site to search for those trapped and remove debris. Authorities continued relief efforts while assessing the damage caused by the collapse.

The incidents come amid continuous rainfall in Mumbai, which has led to disruptions and raised safety concerns across several parts of the city.
