A 55-year-old pedestrian was killed after a portion of concrete and plaster from the terrace parapet wall of a 17-storey residential building collapsed in Mumbai's Chunabhatti area in the early hours of Friday, officials said.
The incident occurred at Galaxy Apartment in Qureshi Nagar, Umarwadi, and was reported to emergency authorities at around 12.37 am, according to information provided by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). The collapse triggered an immediate response from civic and emergency agencies, including the Mumbai Fire Brigade, police personnel, ambulance services and local ward staff.
According to the BMC, fire brigade personnel were informed that a section of plaster from the parapet wall on the terrace of the residential tower had fallen and struck a pedestrian below.
Local residents and bystanders rushed to assist the injured man and transported him to the civic-run Sion Hospital in a private vehicle before emergency responders reached the scene. Hospital authorities later identified the victim as Abdul Wahab, 55.
The BMC said information received from the hospital confirmed that Wahab was declared brought dead upon arrival.
After reaching the location, Mumbai Fire Brigade personnel carried out an assessment of the building and found that a portion of the parapet wall remained precariously attached to the terrace structure.
Officials said the hanging section posed a potential safety risk and required immediate removal to prevent further debris from falling onto surrounding areas. Fire brigade personnel subsequently pulled down the unstable portion using specialised safety equipment, including a preventer and bamboo supports.
The BMC said the area surrounding the building was cordoned off after the removal operation was completed to ensure the safety of residents and pedestrians.
Police personnel assisted in managing the site while civic officials monitored the situation. The exact circumstances leading to the collapse of the parapet wall portion are yet to be determined.
Authorities are expected to examine the condition of the structure and ascertain whether any additional safety measures are required. No other injuries were reported in the incident, according to civic officials.
