Mumbai: Indian rock python spotted crossing road in Aarey forest

A 5-6-foot-long Indian rock python was spotted crossing a road through Aarey's forested stretch, drawing the attention of wildlife lovers who stepped in to ensure motorists did not disturb the reptile.

Imran Udat, Satish Lot, Wasim Athaniya and Hitendra Pachkale spotted the python as it slowly made its way across the road before disappearing into the forest. The group monitored its movement and helped prevent traffic and onlookers from disturbing the snake.

The Indian rock python is among India's largest snake species and is the largest snake found across most parts of the country. In the Northeast, however, the Burmese python is the larger species.

The non-venomous snake can be identified by its large size, dark irregular patches and pinkish head. Known for its slow movement, the Indian rock python is primarily nocturnal, although it may also be active during the day while basking or searching for prey.

Primarily terrestrial, the species is also a capable climber and can scale trees to considerable heights, where it may rest.
