Activist Anjali Damania was part of the dozens of people detained on Sunday after they arrived at Shivaji Park in central Mumbai's Dadar area to participate in a protest in support of the Cockroach Janta Party, police official said. Damania was picked off near the iconic ground and moved to an undisclosed location in a private vehicle, the officials said. "As I reached Shivaji Park in support of CJP, police officers came in plainclothes and detained me. All the police personnel were in plain clothes, and I do not know where they are taking me," Damania told PTI.
Officials stated that most of those detained in the locality have been taken to Shivaji Park police station. Some have been taken to other nearby police stations, they added.
Legal action will be taken against individuals assembling at Shivaji Park to protest without acquiring permission from authorities, a senior police official said.
The area is experiencing heavy police deployment as well as barricaded roads amid ongoing efforts by authorities to ensure there are no unauthorised protests.
On Saturday, police had detained around 600 people from numerous locations in Mumbai for protesting without permission in solidarity with CJP.
The demonstrations had taken place at the August Kranti Maidan, Hutatma Chowk and other locations in the metropolis.
The CJP has been protesting against alleged irregularities in voter rolls and is seeking Chief Election Commission Gyanesh Kumar's resignation.
A first information report (FIR) has been registered against 12 named accused, including Mahatma Gandhi's great-grandson Tushar Gandhi, activist Shailendra Kamble, Prakash Reddy and actor Imran Khan, along with 350 others, in connection with Saturday's protest at August Kranti Maidan in south Mumbai.
The case was registered at Gamdevi Police Station and invokes five sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), relating to disobedience of an order issued by a public servant, wrongful restraint and unlawful assembly.
The sections invoked are Section 223, pertaining to disobedience of an order duly promulgated by a public servant; Section 126(2), pertaining to wrongful restraint; and Sections 189(2), 189(3) and 189(5), which deal with membership of an unlawful assembly, continuing in such an assembly despite an order to disperse, and joining or continuing in an unlawful assembly while armed with a deadly weapon, respectively.
The FIR comes a day after Mumbai Police detained around 600 people during demonstrations planned in solidarity with the Cockroach Janata Party's (CJP) protest against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar in New Delhi.
