Birth card Sion Hospital issued to Janardan Meher. Pics/By Special Arrangement
For Janardan Meher, the birth of his daughter in January came after 13 years of marriage, a moment his family had waited for years. But six months on, they are still awaiting their child's birth certificate.
Serious concerns have surfaced over backlog in birth registrations at Sion Hospital. Families say records of newborns are not forwarded to the BMC. Sources say the hospital has around 400 pending entries.
Meher daughter was born at Sion Hospital on January 10. Since then, he has made repeated rounds to the hospital and BMC's F North ward office for the certificate. "Every time I was told the registration record had not yet reached them from the hospital," Meher alleged. He claimed that on June 18, officials informed him that the work remained pending due to a staff shortage.
Sion Hospital Dean Dr Pramod Ingale said, "The data entry operators assigned to our office were deployed on SIR and census-related work. These entries are required to be completed within one month. Since the deadline was missed, we had to seek special permission and pay the penalty to continue the process. The necessary permission has already been obtained."
