The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Monday concluded elections for the posts of five Ward Committee chairpersons for the 2026-2027 term.
As per the officials, the elections were held for the L, M East, M West, N, and S and T ward committees out of the civic body's total of 17 ward committees.
The official release issued by the civic body stated that three candidates were elected unopposed, as only one nomination was received for the respective posts.
For the L Ward Committee, Vijayendra Shinde of the Shiv Sena was elected unopposed as chairperson.
In the M West Ward Committee, Asha Marathe of the Bharatiya Janata Party was elected unopposed after she was the only nomination received.
Ashwini Mate of the BJP was elected unopposed as chairperson of the N Ward Committee, as no other nominations were filed.
Furthermore, voting was conducted for the remaining two ward committees as well. In the S and T Ward Committees, Sakshi Dalvi of the BJP secured victory with 10 votes, whereas her rival, Suresh Shinde from the Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) faction, received eight votes, while two votes were declared invalid.
For the M East Ward Committee, Khairnusa Akbar Hussain of the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen won the election by securing eight votes. Her opponent, Pragya Sadafule of Shiv Sena, received five votes, with one vote declared invalid.
The elections for the L and N ward committees were presided over by Ritu Tawde as the presiding officer. Meanwhile, the elections for the M East, M West, and S and T Ward committees were conducted under the supervision of Deputy Mayor Sanjay Ghadi.
With these results, the election process for chairpersons of all 17 ward committees of the BMC has now been completed. Earlier, elections for six ward committees were held on March 5 and another six on March 6, while the remaining five were concluded on March 9.
