The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has issued second warning notices to seven ready-mix concrete (RMC) plants in N Ward after inspections found gaps in their air pollution control measures.
The civic body has directed the plants to rectify the deficiencies within seven days of receiving the notices and submit photographic evidence of compliance. Failure to meet the deadline could invite strict action under applicable laws, the BMC said.
The action is part of the civic body's efforts to enforce air pollution control guidelines amid concerns over rising pollution levels in Mumbai.
The BMC had issued instructions to all seven RMC plants in N Ward on October 5, directing them to strictly follow air pollution prevention guidelines.
However, inspections conducted on October 23 revealed deficiencies in several required measures. These included facilities for washing vehicle tyres, green cloth coverings around plant premises, fogging and water sprinkling to control dust, and proper maintenance of cleanliness in surrounding areas.
Despite the earlier instructions, the plants had not implemented the required pollution control measures satisfactorily. Consequently, the N Ward administration issued second warning notices to all seven facilities on Tuesday.
The plants have been instructed to address all identified deficiencies within seven days of receiving the notices and ensure compliance with the prescribed guidelines. They must also submit a compliance report supported by photographs showing the measures taken.
The BMC has informed the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) about the violations.
The N Ward administration has warned that plants failing to implement the necessary measures within the stipulated period will face strict action under the applicable legal provisions.
The civic body said it was focusing on enforcing air pollution control regulations to safeguard public health and the environment, adding that action would be taken against facilities found violating the prescribed norms.
Meanwhile, the BMC has allocated Rs 15 lakh to each ward for a special pre-Diwali cleanliness drive aimed at reducing road dust and mitigating air pollution across Mumbai.
The drive, scheduled from October 28 to November 7, will focus on major arterial roads and identified dust-prone stretches, with intensive cleaning, mechanised sweeping, dust removal and water sprinkling planned ahead of the festival.
The civic body has issued instructions to all wards to undertake the drive as a precautionary measure to control road dust and support the maintenance of Mumbai's Air Quality Index (AQI) during the winter season.
The identified roads include the BKC Connector, Santacruz-Chembur Link Road (SCLR), Eastern Express Highway, Western Express Highway, Jogeshwari-Vikhroli Link Road (JVLR), Ghatkopar-Mankhurd Road, SV Road, Link Road, Carter Road and Sion-Mankhurd Road.
