The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has organised a three-day exhibition of khadi and village industries products at its headquarters to promote local artisans and entrepreneurs and provide them with a wider market.

The exhibition, organised in association with the Maharashtra State Khadi and Village Industries Board, was inaugurated on Tuesday, October 13, by BMC House Leader Ganesh Khankar in the presence of board chairman Ravindra Sathe, who holds the rank of a Minister of State. It will remain open until October 15.

Khankar also appealed to BMC officers and employees to wear khadi clothing at least once a week and encouraged Mumbai residents to purchase khadi and village industries products.

Khadi clothes, handmade jewellery and food products on display

The exhibition features khadi shirts, kurtas and jackets, handloom sarees, honey, soaps, oils, Kolhapuri footwear and handmade jewellery. A variety of food products prepared by women's self-help groups are also available for sale.

The initiative aims to connect local producers with consumers and expand the market for products made by rural artisans, small-scale entrepreneurs and traditional businesses.

BMC urges staff to support local artisans

Speaking at the inauguration, Khankar said the civic body had taken the initiative to promote khadi and village industries and provide a dedicated marketplace for products made by rural artisans and entrepreneurs.

He urged BMC officers and employees to prioritise the use of khadi garments and purchase products made by village industries to support local producers.

Khankar said increased demand for these products could generate employment in rural areas, preserve traditional arts and skills, and strengthen the local economy. He also called on civic employees to actively participate in the initiative and help promote these products.

Senior officials attend inauguration

The inauguration was attended by Maharashtra State Khadi and Village Industries Board Chief Executive Officer Laxman Raut, Joint Chief Executive Officer Ravindra Thackeray, and Deputy Chief Executive Officers Rajkumar Dangar and Nityanand Patil.

BMC's women's self-help groups offer modaks with home delivery across city

Earlier in September, during Ganeshotsav, the BMC organised the BMC Modak Mahotsav 2026, showcasing steamed and fried modaks prepared by women's self-help groups.

The delivery service was available only within Mumbai.

The initiative aimed at providing women's self-help groups with greater market access and business opportunities.
