The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has streamlined its birth, death, and marriage certificate services, with new certificates set to be issued within three working days of registration.
The civic body has also started accepting applications for birth and death registrations and corrections at Civil Facilitation Centres (CFCs) located at ward offices through the Registration of Birth & Death (RBD) portal.
Under the new system, parents can get their child's name added to a birth certificate within three working days, provided the application is submitted within 15 years of the child's birth. Corrections to marriage certificates will also be processed within three working days.
Corrections to birth and death certificates, however, will take up to 25 working days.
Citizens can apply for several types of corrections to birth certificates, including changes to the child's name, parents' names, permanent or temporary address, date of birth, and gender.
Applications for corrections to death certificates, marriage certificates, and conversion of old birth and death certificates into QR-code-enabled certificates will also be accepted at CFCs.
Applicants will be required to submit the necessary documents along with their applications. A Unique ID mentioned on the acknowledgement receipt will allow citizens to track their application status.
The BMC has also made a separate counter available at CFCs for applications to convert old birth and death certificates into QR-code-enabled certificates.
The conversion will be subject to the availability of the original certificate and verification of records maintained at the ward level. If the relevant records cannot be traced locally, the process may take longer, the civic body's public health department said.
Applicants will have to submit the original birth or death certificate for the conversion. The BMC aims to issue QR-code-enabled certificates within approximately 25 working days, subject to record availability and verification.
BMC Commissioner Ashwini Bhide has directed officials to undertake extensive public awareness campaigns about the new facilities. Additional Municipal Commissioner (City) Prajakta Verma Lavangare has also directed officials to install information boards at CFCs and ensure citizens are adequately informed about the application process.
The civic body said the prescribed timelines may vary depending on factors such as the availability of the Civil Registration System (CRS) website, internet connectivity, availability of records, workload of the concerned department and approvals required for older certificates.
The services and corrections will be processed under Section 15 of the Registration of Births and Deaths Act, 1969, the amended Act of 2023 and relevant state government guidelines.
