Students in Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) schools are set to get lessons in robotics and modern technology, with the civic body working with the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT-Bombay) to bring practical, technology-based learning into its schools. The initiative is aimed at introducing students to future technologies while encouraging scientific thinking and entrepreneurship.
As part of the initiative, 50 BMC school teachers and senior officials visited IIT-Bombay on Tuesday to understand how modern technology could be introduced to students in civic-run schools.
During the study tour, IIT-Bombay professors Dr Kavi Arya and Dr Shivaram Kalyanakrishnan explained the institute's 'e-Yantra' project to the visiting teachers and officials. A detailed presentation was also made on ways in which BMC school students could benefit from exposure to modern technology.
The study tour was organised under the guidance of BMC Commissioner Ashwini Bhide and Additional Municipal Commissioner (City) Prajakta Verma-Lavangare.
The initiative seeks to give students exposure to robotics, coding and other advanced technologies, alongside their regular academic curriculum. The civic body said the programme is also intended to develop a scientific outlook among students and encourage them to explore entrepreneurship.
Dr Kavi Arya said BMC school students have curiosity, determination and initiative. He expressed hope that these qualities could be channelled through the e-Yantra project and eventually help students develop the skills needed to start their own ventures.
The visiting teachers and officials were given demonstrations of several advanced technology projects during the study tour. These included drones, Alphabot line-following technology and other robotics projects.
The demonstrations were intended to familiarise teachers with technologies that could be adapted for learning activities in BMC schools. The visit also provided them with an understanding of how practical, technology-oriented activities could complement classroom education.
A Lab-in-a-Box demonstration was also conducted during the visit. It showed teachers how updated laboratories could be started in schools through a relatively simple model, giving students access to practical learning and experimentation.
An Open House session involving BMC teachers and IIT-Bombay experts was also organised. Discussions during the session focused on the implementation of the National Education Policy 2020 in BMC schools and ways to make education more enjoyable and engaging for students.
The collaboration between BMC and IIT-Bombay will continue, with practical activities involving robotics and coding planned for students in civic-run schools.
As part of the continued collaboration, IIT-Bombay professors will guide BMC school students and expose them to advanced areas of study beyond their regular academic curriculum.
The civic body said the initiative will allow students to gain hands-on exposure to modern technology, while developing scientific and entrepreneurial skills. The collaboration is also expected to provide teachers with greater familiarity with emerging technologies and practical methods that can be incorporated into school education.
