Mumbai Crime: 'First floor only' burglars nabbed by Sion police

The accused have been arrested for over 10 housebreaking cases in Sion, while they are wanted in several other cases; they used to target the first floor of buildings for their burglaries


The Sion police have arrested two people, who used to target the first floor of buildings for housebreaking. One of the accused Pawan Singh (23), who belongs to a Naxalite-infested area in Jharkhand, came to Mumbai a few years back to a earn a living, where he met the main accused Sanjay Giri (26) and both started committing burglaries in Mumbai.

Senior police inspector Yeshudas Gorde of Sion police station said, "The accused have been arrested in 10 housebreaking cases in Sion, while they are wanted in several other cases. The cops have recovered a screwdriver, rods, 99 grams of gold, two kilos of silver and $200 (US). The total value of the seized items is Rs 3,33,000. The accused are currently in police custody."

Giri is a habitual offender and used to spend money on bar girls in Mira Road and Dahisar. In one such bar he met Singh and both became friends later. Singh is from Chatra district in Jharkhand. A police officer said, "The area is heavily infested by Maoists. Due to the Maoist area and financial problems, Singh shifted to Mumbai along with his family and he worked in a Mira Road bar. Giri influenced Singh to commit housebreaking to lead a lavish life. Singh also got addicted and spent money on bar girls and stayed in lodges with Giri."

ACP Ashok Rupwate said, "On November 22, our team picked up Giri from Sion society area due to our suspicion. On further investigation, he revealed Singh's name. During the search operation of Giri's house, we recovered several valuables."

Meanwhile, Singh was on one of his periodic visits to Jharkhand. A team of three headed by PSI Mohan Jagdale left for the state on November 24. Jagdale said, "We spent three days in that area and it was a very difficult task to locate Singh. Three days later in the night, we nabbed Singh and brought him to Mumbai."

Gorde said, "They (the accused) mainly targeted flats on the first floor; they broke open the grills and window and entered the house. Several cases have been detected." The two accused have been remanded to police custody.
