Calling themselves Russians, the duo entered a shop on Hughes Road at noon yesterday; while pretending to look at jewellery, one of them slipped a gold bangle into his pocket

Two foreign nationals entered a jewellery store in south Mumbai and made off with a gold bangle yesterday. The salesperson of the shop realised they'd been robbed after the duo left without making any purchase.

The two Russians have been captured on the store's CCTV camera, looking at the ornaments

The owner then registered the case with the Gamdevi police. According to the complaint, the men told the salesperson they were Russians. The incident occurred at Rathi Jewellers, which is located on Hughes Road. According to the police, the two men entered the shop at around 12 noon and asked the salesperson to show them some ornaments, feigning interest in purchasing them.

The salesperson proceeded to do so and during this time, one of them allegedly slipped a gold bangle into his pocket. The person across the counter suspected something was not right, but didn't pay much heed to his misgivings. Later, when the duo left without buying anything from the shop, the salesperson at the counter saw that one bangle, which he was showing to the Russians, was missing.

The owner then went to the Gamdevi police station and registered the offence. Senior Police Inspector Rajaram Prabhu, from Gamdevi police station, said, "We have procured footage of the CCTV cameras installed in the shop and are investigating the matter. The stolen bangle weighs 40 grams and is worth Rs 90,000.

The complainant told us that the two men had told him that they are Russians." The case has been registered against two unknown persons under Sections 380 (theft in dwelling house, etc.) and 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) of the Indian Penal Code.
