What if Satyajit Ray had a colour palette that spanned beyond black and white? DAG Mumbai is giving the city a chance to find out. Its new archival exhibition, Faces and Facets: Satyajit Ray in Colour, brings together photographs by Nemai Ghosh, Ray's photographer from 1968 until his demise in 1992.

Running from September 11 to October 31, at its Mumbai address the exhibition will offer a glimpse of the celebrated filmmaker in colour. Ray described Ghosh as a "sort of Boswell", documenting his films, sets and quieter moments with remarkable intimacy.

The exhibition will showcase Ghosh's perspective of Ray away from the glamour, capturing him at home, on sets, with his beloved camera, from directing and sketching to listening and simply being, the images offer a more intimate look at the man behind the masterpieces. Alongside cinematic stills are photographs of sets, actors and locations, adding colour to a familiar cinematic legacy.

All hands on deck as Mumbai's Deco community prepares for an international gathering as Art Deco Mumbai has been voted by the International Coalition of Art Deco Societies (ICADS) to host the 19th Art Deco International Conference in 2029.

Elaborating on the news, founder and trustee Atul Kumar shared, "Held every two years, the six-day conference scheduled for January 2029 will bring together scholars, conservationists, enthusiasts and Art Deco societies from across the world. The Mumbai edition will highlight the city's distinctive architecture, history and conservation efforts, while bringing the global Deco community together for talks, exchanges and celebrations, offering an opportunity to showcase Mumbai's architectural legacy to a wider audience."

The foodies on Bandra's Waroda Road have one more stop to add to their growing itinerary. Restaurateurs Geeta Amin and Timanshu Mokal have propped up Even Steven, a cosy 25-seater all-day diner with a focus on the sandwich.

"I think we've overcomplicated food a little, and sandwiches are a nice way of bringing it back to fare that people genuinely crave for. Especially with younger diners, there's a curiosity around taking something familiar, and seeing it in a completely different way," shared Amin. Honorary Consul General of Iceland, Gul Kripalani's (below) passing on Tuesday, September 1, has evoked an avalanche of emotions and sorrow. This diarist recalled a conversation with Kripalani two months ago, when Mumbai was reeling from a series of tree crashes in early July, thanks to the monsoon fury.
At that time, Kripalani had spoken about a terrifying moment when a massive tree crashed near his car outside the Taj Mahal Hotel in Colaba, seconds after they had driven past. "I had passed that spot a second or two ago; that is how close it was," he had said then.
Kripalani recalled that he had asked his driver to turn the car back, and go as close to the tree fall spot as possible. He wanted to be on site to help, in case anybody needed an emergency ride but thankfully, nobody was hurt. Always the concerned and helpful gentleman, Kripalani had actually gone back to help, at the same time acknowledging how fortunate he had been but never forgetting that somebody else may not have been that fortunate. Rest In Peace, Mr Kripalani; you leave a void in all the lives you touched.
