A fire broke out at Saraswati Bhavan on Lamington Road in Mumbai late Saturday night, with the blaze confined to a ground-floor godown of a ground-plus-one-storey building, according to the Mumbai Fire Brigade.
The incident was reported at around 11.33 pm on September 5. The fire was confined to the godown on the ground floor of the G+1 structure.
The Mumbai Fire Brigade initially classified the incident as a Level-I fire at around 11.49 pm. The response was subsequently escalated to Level-II at around 12.40 am on September 6.
Fire brigade personnel, police officials, an emergency ambulance service and ward staff were mobilised to the site to respond to the incident.
The fire was contained to the godown, and no injuries were reported in the incident.
In a separate incident, a fire broke out in the electric meter box room of a 23-storey residential building in Navi Mumbai on Saturday morning, and no casualties were reported, officials said.
The blaze occurred at Beverly Park society on the Vashi-Belapur Palm Beach Road, they said.
Dense smoke from the meter box room on the ground floor of the building's "B" Wing rose to the eighth floor, an official said, adding that the fire was a result of a short circuit.
Prompt action by security personnel and the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) Fire Services prevented injuries or loss of life.
Security guards on site initially attempted to contain the blaze using two fire extinguishers. Upon arrival, fire officials deployed two additional extinguishers and used a hose reel to douse the flames.
Due to the heavy buildup of smoke, firefighters safely evacuated residents up to the fourth floor as a precaution. A thorough inspection of the building up to the 18th floor confirmed that all occupants were safe and accounted for, the official said.
