Western Railway, during the morning rush hour on Friday, June 26, faced a disruption, causing a chaotic situation for the commuters. While the services were disrupted between Andheri and Churchgate stations, they were restored following multiple technical failures.

Following the disruptions, commuters lashed out at railway authorities over what they described as a complete lack of communication during the crisis.

The disruptions during the peak morning rush after an Overhead Equipment (OHE) fault between Dadar and Churchgate affected train operations from around 6:00 am to 7:22 am. Shortly after the OHE issue was rectified, a point failure at Churchgate station around 8:00 am triggered further delays, causing a cascading impact on suburban services and disrupting the morning timetable.

Services restored

Railway officials later confirmed that both technical issues had been resolved and services were gradually returning to normal.

However, the restoration did little to ease the frustration of thousands of commuters, many of whom said the lack of timely information worsened the situation.

Expressing disbelief over the lack of communication and technical failure during peak hours, passengers alleged that Western Railway failed to issue prompt updates through its official social media platforms or digital channels despite the disruption continuing for several hours.

Several commuters said they remained unaware of the nature and extent of the problem until they reached overcrowded platforms or found trains halted between stations.

"If the railways knew the timings and nature of the disruption, why were there no updates on the official social media handles? Why was there no information available to passengers?" a commuter questioned.

Others criticised the absence of announcements inside trains and at stations.

Another commuter highlighted, "There were no announcements inside the train by the driver or the guard. They got off the train, which meant they were aware of the situation. They should have informed passengers before leaving instead of forcing the public to figure out what was happening on their own."

Chaos at various railway stations

The communication gap, passengers said, added to confusion at several stations, with many travellers unable to decide whether to wait for delayed services, switch to alternative modes of transport, or postpone their journeys.

The disruption came during one of the busiest travel periods of the day, affecting thousands of office-goers and students across Mumbai's Western suburban corridor.

While train services have since stabilised, commuters have urged Western Railway to strengthen its real-time passenger information systems, improve public announcements, and provide timely updates on social media during operational emergencies to minimise inconvenience in future incidents.
