Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde on Wednesday asked the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to ensure that proposals, projects and civic works that are not directly connected to her are not referred to in her name.
In a letter to BMC Commissioner Ashwini Bhide dated August 19, 2026, the mayor said that the proposals related to various civic works, schemes and projects are placed before BMC committees, the Standing Committee and the General Body. She said it was inappropriate for her name to be mentioned in such matters when she has no connection with them or has not issued any instructions.
Her letter comes after the BMC's official statement after reports on discussions over an alleged Rs 25 lakh expenditure on publicity for the Mumbai Mayor.
Ritu Tawde has directed the Municipal Commissioner to ensure that whenever a work, proposal, process or subject mentions the mayor or the mayor's name, the concerned department must inform the mayor and the mayor's office about its approval, budget, tender or other related procedures.
The mayor, in her letter to the Mumbai civic chief, said that this would help prevent her name from being unnecessarily associated with civic proposals and projects.
According to the letter, proposals, schemes and projects that have no direct connection with the Mayor should not be brought before her or placed before the relevant civic committees, Standing Committee or General Body merely because her name has been mentioned.
The Mumbai Mayor also asked the civic officials to ensure that matters directly related to the mayor, the mayor's residence or the mayor's office are clearly distinguished from other civic matters.
Tawde has asked the Municipal Commissioner to issue immediate written instructions to the concerned departments on the matter.
The letter also states that the directions should be implemented promptly to ensure that the mayor's name is not used in connection with unrelated civic works, proposals or administrative procedures.
The mayor's directive is aimed at preventing confusion over which civic proposals are genuinely connected to her office and which are not. It also seeks to ensure that proposals placed before BMC committees and other civic bodies follow the proper administrative process, officials said.
