Second tree crashes onto crowd after first collapse in Santacruz West, eight injured

What began as a gathering of curious onlookers around an uprooted tree nearly turned into a major tragedy after a second full-grown tree suddenly crashed onto the crowd in Santacruz West on Thursday afternoon.

Eight people sustained injuries in the incident, though all were discharged after receiving primary treatment, hospital officials said.

The incident occurred around 1.30 pm on Relief Road, behind SNDT College, a key stretch connecting Juhu Tara Road, Pawan Hans Quarters and Juhu Airport. According to eyewitnesses, residents had assembled to inspect a tree that had earlier collapsed across the road when another tree, located inside a private property undergoing redevelopment, came crashing down on the bystanders.

One of the injured, who suffered a fractured shoulder, said he had rushed to the spot after being alerted by his watchman.

"I stepped down and found that a small crowd had already gathered, and luckily no one was injured. Suddenly, there was a deafening cracking sound. I tried to run but slipped and injured my shoulder. Moments later, I found myself trapped under branches. Construction workers helped pull us out," he said.

He added that severe traffic delayed their journey to the hospital. "We had to take a shortcut through the Santacruz bus depot and request security personnel to allow us through because it was a medical emergency," he said.

According to civic officials, the first tree had fallen onto the 90-foot-wide road, prompting residents and passers-by to stop and inspect the scene. Within minutes, the second tree toppled from the adjoining redevelopment site, injuring eight people.

Construction workers at the site immediately launched rescue efforts, pulling those trapped beneath the branches before they were shifted to Nanavati Max Hospital.

BMC Corporator Hetal Gala said the tree standing on the main road had recently been trimmed, while the second tree was located inside a private redevelopment project. She confirmed that all eight injured persons received timely medical treatment and are now out of danger.

Hospital sources said all victims sustained minor injuries and were discharged after first aid and observation.

Meanwhile, K West Assistant Municipal Commissioner Chakarpani Alle was unavailable for comment on the incident.
