In yet another case of errant driver crushing a footpath dweller to death and then running away, a 48-year-old daily wage labourer in Mulund East was killed in the early hours of Friday. The Mulund Police has registered a case against an unknown motorist and is checking CCTV footage for clues.

Devlal Jadhav

Devlal Jadhav lived on a makeshift footpath shanty with his wife and three kids. On Thursday night, both Devlal and his wife Shalu were outside on the footpath at around 11 pm, but a midnight shower sent them scurrying inside. At around 1 am, Devlal emerged again when the rain stopped and was sleeping on the footpath.

According to the police, at 4 am, their neighbour Tarabai woke Shalu and pointed to Devlal, who appeared to have bruises and injuries on his body. They then called the police who rushed Devlal to MT Agarwal Municipal Hospital in Mulund (West), but he was declared dead on arrival.

"During inquiry, we found that a vehicle has crushed Devlal. Initial post-mortem report also says that there has been damage to the internal organs," said an officer from the Mulund police station.

"We are investigating the accident and trying to determine the make of the vehicle. As of now, we have booked an unknown motorist under IPC 279 (rash driving) and 304 A (Causing death by negligence)," the officer added.
