The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has taken action against 20 unauthorised structures and 15 unauthorised stalls in Borivali West under its âPedestrian First' campaign, aimed at providing obstruction-free, safe and continuous footpaths for pedestrians.
The action was carried out on Tuesday in the R-Central ward areas, including Lokmanya Tilak Road, Market Lane and Borivali Subway Road, the BMC said in a press release.
As part of the first phase of the campaign in Borivali, the BMC has begun work to clear encroachments from six footpaths covering a total stretch of around 8 kilometres. The civic body said the ongoing action will help provide obstruction-free and more accessible footpaths to citizens, particularly those exiting Borivali West railway station and pedestrians using the surrounding areas.
The drive follows directions issued by BMC Commissioner Ashwini Bhide to senior officials of the concerned departments for strict implementation of the âPedestrian First' campaign. The initiative focuses on removing unauthorised encroachments and constructions from footpaths to ensure safer and continuous pedestrian movement.
For the action carried out on Tuesday, the BMC deployed two JCB machines, five dumpers, more than 10 officers and staff, and 20 workers. More than 15 police personnel were also deployed to provide the necessary security during the operation.
The operation was carried out under the guidance of Deputy Municipal Commissioner (Zone 7) Manish Valanju and led by Assistant Commissioner (R-Central ward) Dr Praful Tambe. The civic officials, employees and workers concerned participated in the drive.
The BMC said the first phase in Borivali covers six footpaths and an approximately 8-kilometre stretch where encroachments are being progressively removed. The action is intended to make these pedestrian routes more accessible and reduce obstructions for citizens using the footpaths.
The âPedestrian First' campaign was launched across Mumbai earlier this year, with the BMC identifying 320 kilometres of footpaths for encroachment removal in its first phase. The Mumbai civic body has also directed officials to undertake footpath repairs, maintenance and beautification, alongside clearing unauthorised hawkers and other obstructions, with pedestrian safety and accessibility as key priorities.
