The Mumbai-bound carriageway of the Mumbai-Pune Expressway's Missing Link section reopened for traffic on Monday night after remaining closed for over 18 hours due to a rain-triggered landslide, officials said.
The stretch was reopened after authorities completed debris removal and conducted detailed safety inspections to ensure the route was safe for vehicular traffic.
Traffic on the Mumbai-bound carriageway resumed at 10:10 pm on Monday after safety inspections were completed at the landslide-hit stretch, a senior Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) official told PTI.
The carriageway had been shut since around 4 am after a landslide occurred near the exit of Tunnel 2, the longest tunnel on the Missing Link section that passes through the Sahyadri mountain range, disrupting traffic for over 18 hours.
Meanwhile, relentless monsoon showers have triggered widespread waterlogging across Vasai-Virar and Nalasopara, inundating roads, shops and residential societies, while severely disrupting daily life.
Flooded roads have made it difficult for commuters to reach railway stations, compounding travel woes as rail services continue to be disrupted by waterlogged tracks.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has placed Palghar district under a red alert, warning of continued heavy to extremely heavy rainfall.
In view of the adverse weather conditions, schools in the district have been closed as a precautionary measure.
Authorities have urged residents to avoid unnecessary travel and follow official advisories as emergency teams remain on alert across the region.
Western Railway has cancelled 10 MEMU train services scheduled for Tuesday, due to severe waterlogging caused by continuous heavy rainfall across the Mumbai suburban network.
According to a passenger advisory issued by the railway authorities, the affected services include trains operating between Dahanu Road, Panvel, Vasai Road, Borivali, Virar and Surat.
The cancelled services are:
Train No. 69164 - Dahanu Road-Panvel
Train No. 69165 - Panvel-Vasai Road
Train No. 69168 - Vasai Road-Panvel
Train No. 69167 - Panvel-Vasai Road
Train No. 69166 - Vasai Road-Panvel
Train No. 69161 - Panvel-Dahanu Road
Train No. 69174 - Dahanu Road-Borivali
Train No. 69139 - Borivali-Valsad
Train No. 69141 - Virar-Surat
Train No. 61002 - Dahanu Road-Borivali
Western Railway has advised passengers to plan their journeys accordingly and check the latest train status before commencing travel, as heavy rainfall continues to affect rail operations across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
Mumbai local train services between Vasai Road and Virar resumed after a brief disruption caused by heavy rainfall. The first local towards Churchgate departed from Virar at 3:57 am, restoring connectivity for commuters.
