Mumbai rain: Santacruz records over 200 mm rainfall in 24 hours amid IMD orange alert

For the fourth day in a row on Thursday, Mumbai received heavy to very heavy rainfall amid the India Meteorological Department's (IMD) week-long orange alert for the city, with over 200 mm of rain in a short span of 24 hours. In the 24 hours between 8 am on Wednesday and 8 am on Thursday, the Santacruz weather station recorded 205 mm of rain, while the Colaba weather station recorded 158 mm.

31.9% of average

This has brought the total rain received by Mumbai this monsoon season to 668.9 mm at Colaba, or 31.9 per cent of the average seasonal rainfall (2095 mm), and 718.3 mm at Santacruz, or 30.9 per cent of the average seasonal rainfall (2319 mm).

Raigad: Friday and Saturday
Thane: Saturday
Palghar: Thursday
On all other days, these districts have an orange alert for rain.

Going past July 2 mark

The rainfall this year no longer marks a deficit in comparison to last year. By July 2 last year, Colaba had recorded 605.6 mm of rain, or 28.9 per cent of the seasonal rainfall, and Santacruz had recorded 527.7 mm, or 22.7 per cent of rain. According to IMD figures, Colaba now has a departure of 11.4 per cent (positive), and Santacruz now has a departure of 18.8 per cent (positive).

Mumbai on orange alert

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has sounded an orange alert for Mumbai till Sunday (July 5), indicating heavy to very heavy rainfall, and a yellow alert for Mumbai till Tuesday (July 7), indicating heavy rain in isolated pockets.
