The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has directed its road department engineers to ensure that every pothole-related complaint received during the monsoon season is resolved within 24 hours, officials said.
The instructions were issued by Additional Municipal Commissioner (Projects) Abhijit Bangar during a review meeting held to assess monsoon preparedness and road maintenance across the city.
According to the civic administration, around 1,700 kilometres of roads in Mumbai have already been converted into cement concrete roads, while work on the remaining stretches is progressing.
Officials said the large-scale concretisation programme has significantly reduced the number of potholes and road-related complaints during this year's monsoon season. It has also helped lower expenditure on pothole repairs.
Bangar instructed road engineers to remain alert and carry out regular inspections of roads under their jurisdiction.
Secondary engineers appointed across the city's 227 civic wards have been asked to travel through their designated areas on two-wheelers, inspect road conditions daily and ensure immediate repairs wherever required.
Officials have also been told not to wait for complaints from citizens but to proactively identify and repair potholes.
The civic administration emphasised that all pothole repairs should be carried out according to prescribed technical standards and quality guidelines.
Engineers have been directed to closely monitor contractors responsible for road maintenance in different civic zones and ensure that repairs are completed using approved scientific methods.
Special attention has been given to the use of mastic material, which is considered more durable and helps prevent repaired potholes from reopening.
The BMC has also instructed its road department to ensure that potholes do not develop on major road corridors, including the Eastern Express Highway, Western Express Highway and Eastern Freeway.
The Mumbai civic body said it would continue to coordinate with other government agencies responsible for maintaining roads under their jurisdiction and ensure timely repairs wherever necessary.
Bangar clarified that roads currently under the Defect Liability Period (DLP) must be repaired by contractors free of cost as per contract conditions.
The BMC will not provide any additional payment for pothole repairs on such roads. Contractors may face penalties if excessive potholes are found on roads that remain under their maintenance responsibility.
The civic body has also been directed to publish detailed information on project roads, DLP roads and non-DLP roads on its official website.
The BMC has encouraged residents to use the "MyBMC MARG" Complaint Management and Redressal System to report potholes.
Citizens are advised to upload clear photographs, accurate locations and relevant details when submitting complaints to help authorities take swift action.
Officials said prompt reporting by citizens, combined with rapid response from engineers, will help improve road safety and minimise inconvenience during the monsoon season.
The directions were issued during a meeting attended by senior officials from the roads and traffic department, including Deputy Commissioner (Infrastructure) Girish Nikam and Chief Engineer (Roads) Mantayya Swami.
The civic administration said continuous monitoring of road conditions will remain a priority throughout the monsoon to ensure safer travel for Mumbai residents.
