The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has confirmed that the Southwest Monsoon 2026 is likely to reach Mumbai around June 10, even as it makes an early advance into the Andaman Sea and Bay of Bengal.
According to the IMD's latest press release issued on Saturday, the monsoon has already entered southeast Arabian Sea, southwest and southeast Bay of Bengal, large parts of Andaman Sea, the entire Nicobar Islands, and some parts of Andaman Islands including Sri Vijaya Puram.
On Friday, mid-day.com had reported citing IMD that the Southwest Monsoon is likely to set in over Kerala around May 26. Conditions are favourable for further advancement into the remaining parts of the southeast Arabian Sea, Bay of Bengal, Andaman Sea and eastern central Bay of Bengal in the next three-four days.
Meanwhile, IMD has predicted scattered to widespread heavy-very heavy rainfall over Northeast India, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, Kerala and Mahe, and South Interior Karnataka during the next few days. Isolated extremely heavy rainfall is also possible over Andaman and Nicobar Islands and parts of Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim this weekend.
Several parts of northwest and central India plains are likely to experience heat wave to severe heat wave conditions for many days.
West Rajasthan: Severe heatwave predicted on May 21-22 in some areas.
Uttar Pradesh: Heatwave likely; severe in some pockets from May 19-22.
West Madhya Pradesh, East Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, East Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Chhattisgarh: Isolated heatwave conditions expected on various days till May 22.
Heavy to very heavy rain (11-20 cm) recorded at isolated places in Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Assam, and Meghalaya.
Strong winds (50-76 kmph) lashed several places across Haryana, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura and parts of East Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, Odisha, and Gangetic West Bengal.
Hail reported in Jammu & Kashmir, Uttarakhand, and East Madhya Pradesh.
Maximum temperature of 45.6 degrees Celsius recorded at Amravati, Maharashtra, on Friday.
Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea in the following areas:
Bay of Bengal: Mannar Gulf, Comorin area, south and central Bay of Bengal, and Andaman Sea till May 21.
Arabian Sea: Off Kerala-Karnataka coasts, Lakshadweep, and adjoining areas till May 19-21.
IMD has urged residents in heatwave-prone areas to stay hydrated, avoid direct sun exposure during peak hours, and take necessary precautions. Farmers in expected heavy rainfall regions have been advised to ensure proper drainage and safeguard standing crops.
