Former Maharashtra Environment Minister and Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray has written to Maharashtra Forest Minister Ganesh Naik, urging the immediate opening of Mumbai's first dedicated mangrove park at Gorai Mangrove Park for public access.

While writing a letter to the Naik, Thackeray highlighted that although the park is fully prepared and ready for visitors, it continues to remain shut. Thackeray further noted that he had previously raised the issue through a letter dated April 7, 2026, and reminded the Forest Minister that during the state budget session, the government had assured that the park would be opened soon.

"Despite the assurance, no concrete action has followed," Thackeray said, calling on the Forest Minister to issue immediate directions to open the facility without further delay.

The Shiv Sena (UBT) leader further stressed that the park would serve as an important green space for Mumbai residents while also emerging as a major eco-tourism attraction that would promote awareness about coastal biodiversity and mangrove conservation.

Mumbai's first dedicated mangrove biodiversity

The Gorai Mangrove Park, developed by the Maharashtra forest department's Mangrove Cell, is Mumbai's first dedicated facility showcasing mangrove biodiversity and coastal ecology.

On March 12, Mid-Day reported that the park was likely to open to the public in April. The project, however, has faced repeated delays despite being ready for several months, reportedly due to administrative reasons.

Earlier, on March 9, Mid-May reported that Thackeray had written to Naik seeking the early inauguration of the park.

A visit by mid-day to the site last month showed that all works had been completed, including finishing touches, CCTV camera installation, and a souvenir shop setup.

Once opened, visitors will be able to walk through the mangrove ecosystem on an elevated boardwalk and gain insight into coastal biodiversity through guided experiences and digital exhibits.

Project cost

Estimated at a cost of Rs 33.43 crore, the project aims to raise awareness about mangrove biodiversity, conservation, and the importance of preserving Mumbai's fragile coastal ecosystems.
