Residents of Shivaji Park have opposed the proposed October 2 protest by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), saying repeated demonstrations in and around the ground have turned into a source of inconvenience for people living in the area. Furthermore, the residents urged the police and civic authorities to ensure that any protest planned in the area does not compromise public access, traffic movement or the safety of residents.
A heated argument broke out between residents and CJP members on Wednesday, after locals objected to the planned agitation at Shivaji Park. Residents said they were not against the right to protest but questioned the repeated use of the area for political demonstrations, which they claimed affects the daily lives of those living around the iconic ground. Members of the Shivaji Park ALM said protests result in traffic congestion, noise, restrictions on movement, and difficulties for senior citizens. They also raised concerns over access for emergency vehicles when large crowds gather.
Ravindra Menkurkar, ALM member
âEvery time there is a protest, our entire routine gets disrupted. Roads get crowded, vehicles are parked haphazardly, and residents are forced to take longer routes to reach their homes. We understand that people have a right to protest, but residential areas should not have to bear the consequences .'
Nishat Mohite, local resident
âThe problem is not limited to the few hours of the protest. Barricades, police deployment, loudspeakers, and people gathering around the ground affect us from early morning. Senior citizens and children especially face difficulties moving around the area.'
Vaibhav Rege, ALM member
âThere are designated grounds and spaces where protests can be conducted without disturbing an entire residential neighbourhood. Shivaji Park is surrounded by homes, schools and other establishments. Also, the park is established for recreational purposes. Political parties should use places meant for such gatherings instead of repeatedly putting residents through this inconvenience.'
