The Sewri police have arrested a 35-year-old Arabic language tutor for allegedly behaving inappropriately with his minor girl students, aged between 12 and 14, who attended his Arabic classes at a religious institute in Sewri. The accused, who also lived on the premises, has been remanded to two days of police custody.
According to the complaint, a 33-year-old woman approached the Sewri police on October 29 after her 14-year-old daughter confided that the tutor had behaved in an objectionable manner during lessons. The girl had been attending classes with the accused between March 2024 and October 2025.
The complaint further alleged that the tutor made obscene gestures, touched the girls inappropriately, and showed them objectionable videos on his phone. It also alleged that he behaved similarly with another 12-year-old student and two other girls from the same batch.
Following the complaint, the police registered an FIR under Sections 74, 75, and 79 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Section 8 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. A special team traced and arrested the accused from the institute itself. His mobile phone has been seized and sent for forensic examination to verify the alleged content and communication with the students.
A police officer said the institute caters to several girl students who come to learn Urdu and Arabic. "We are examining whether he engaged in similar behaviour with other students. The investigation is being conducted with utmost sensitivity," the officer added.
