Mumbai's tree-fall crisis: Why experts say the real problem lies beneath the surface

Every monsoon, tree-fall incidents disrupt life across Mumbai. Experts say decades of poor pruning, rampant concreting, damaged roots and neglect—not just heavy rain—have left thousands of trees vulnerable to collapse.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) received 1493 calls regarding tree-collapse incidents across the city over the past week. According to information from BMC's Disaster Management Department, between June 29 and 6 pm on Monday, 435 incidents were reported in the island city while 399 and 659 were from the eastern and western suburbs, respectively.

Three people were killed in tree collapse incidents in this period, including 11-year-old Vihaan Shrivastava - who died when a 60-year-old peepal tree fell on a school bus carrying 13 children in Chembur on Tuesday, June 30 - and 18-year-old Kumar Hasan Raza Jahangir Alam Syed, who died when a tree collapsed on his bike in Aarey Colony on Saturday. At least 16 other Mumbaikars were injured in such incidents.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had issued an orange alert for the city between Monday and Friday last week, and a red alert from Saturday to Monday.

Jogeshwari collapse

At least seven people were injured, of whom four needed hospitalisation between Sunday and 2.45 am Monday. According to BMC, a tree had fallen on a house at Ashok Brahma chawl in Matar Pada, Amboli, Jogeshwari West. While three suffered minor injuries and refused to be admitted. The rest were sent to Cooper hospital for treatment.

BMC's explanation

The BMC has attributed tree fall incidents to a combination of high wind velocity, heavy rainfall - due to which retained water in trees leads to an increase in their weight, development challenges that are at present being investigated by the civic body, including road concreting and construction of underground utilities that block the growth of tree roots, and unauthorised chopping of tree branches.

Rainfall over the weekend

During 48 hours on Saturday and Sunday under India Meteorological Department's (IMD) Red alert for Mumbai, the city recorded over 300 mm of rainfall. According to information from BMC, the island city received 300 mm of rainfall, while the eastern and western suburbs received 380 and 345 mm, respectively.
