Mumbai, Thane and Kolhapur are likely to see isolated spells of rain with possible thunder and lightning on Wednesday evening, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said in the nowcast issued at 5.30 pm.
The IMD's nowcast said light to moderate spells of rain, with the possibility of thunder and lightning, were very likely at isolated places in Mumbai, Thane and Kolhapur. The yellow warning is valid for three hours from 5.30 pm.
The warning comes as the IMD's local forecast for Mumbai also indicates the possibility of rain or thundershowers during the evening and night. Earlier in the day, the weather agency had said Mumbai and its suburbs are likely to remain partly cloudy on Wednesday, with light to moderate rain or thundershowers possible towards the evening or night.
The IMD's local forecast said the maximum and minimum temperatures in Mumbai are likely to remain around 32 degrees Celsius and 25 degrees Celsius, respectively, on Wednesday.
For the following 48 hours, the city and suburbs are expected to remain partly cloudy, with one or two spells of light rain possible. Temperatures during this period are likely to be around 33 degrees Celsius and 26 degrees Celsius.
The district-wise forecast issued by the IMD at 11.58 am on Wednesday also puts Mumbai under a forecast for light to moderate rain or thundershowers on Wednesday. The probability of the forecast weather is categorised as "very likely".
For Thursday, October 1, Mumbai is expected to see light rain, with light rain also forecast for the subsequent days covered by the bulletin.
For Thane, the district forecast indicates the possibility of thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, light to moderate rainfall and gusty winds reaching 30-40 kmph at isolated places on Wednesday. The forecast for October 1 indicates light rain or thundershowers, followed by light rain on subsequent days.
Kolhapur is also among the districts covered by the IMD's yellow nowcast issued at 5.30 pm. Separately, the district-wise forecast indicates the possibility of thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, light to moderate rainfall and gusty winds of 30-40 kmph at isolated places on Wednesday. Light rain is forecast for the following days.
The district outlook does not indicate a colour warning for Friday, October 2, onwards, although light rain remains part of the forecast for the subsequent days.
The IMD has advised people to take precautions during thunderstorm activity. People should avoid open areas, not stand under tall trees, and take shelter indoors if thunderstorms develop.
The weather agency has also advised people to stay away from water bodies and objects that conduct electricity during thunderstorms.
