As Mumbai deals with a 10 per cent water cut, the civic administration is expecting the arrival of the South West Monsoon within a week, which will resolve the water supply issue. At present, Mumbai's seven lakes have 11.78 per cent water stock, or 170,540 million litres in total, against a capacity of 1447,363 million litres. In comparison, on the same day last year, the consolidated water stock stood at 9.5 per cent (137,513 million litres).
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the South West Monsoon is likely to arrive in Mumbai by June 15. IMD has indicated a weak monsoon for the city, with up to 90 per cent of the average rainfall.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) imposed a 10 per cent water cut across Mumbai on May 15, 2026. However, a senior civic official said, "There is no need to panic about the availability of water. We anticipate that Mumbai will get considerable rainfall by July 31, to bring lake levels to a comfortable position. At present, no additional water cut has been imposed in Mumbai."
Areas under the Kalyan Dombivali Municipal Corporation (KDMC) are experiencing up to 20 per cent water cut. "We are now receiving water at much less pressure than two months ago. To rationalise, we have decided to use buckets instead of showers for bathing, we do not wash our vehicles as frequently, and we ensure the washing machine runs fewer washing cycles than before," said Dombivli resident Sameer Mahdiik Kate.

âI have changed the fittings on my hosepipes for watering plants in my garden. This hosepipe uses much less water. Because of my housing society's water tank capacity, I will have water 24X7. But we decided in an internal committee meeting to ensure we all save water. It is the need of the hour.'
