Mumbai is expected to experience partly cloudy skies and hot, humid weather conditions on Tuesday, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting the possibility of light rain in parts of the city and suburbs during the night and early morning hours.

While isolated showers may provide brief relief, weather officials have indicated that humidity levels will remain high, making conditions uncomfortable across much of the city throughout the day.

According to the IMD, the maximum temperature is expected to reach around 35 degrees Celsius, while the minimum temperature is likely to remain close to 29 degrees Celsius.

Temperatures remain above seasonal comfort levels

Weather observations recorded by the IMD on June 16 showed that Mumbai continued to witness warm overnight temperatures.

The Colaba observatory recorded a minimum temperature of 29.7 degrees Celsius, while the Santacruz observatory reported a minimum of 29.3 degrees Celsius. Such elevated night-time temperatures have contributed to persistent discomfort, particularly in densely populated urban areas.

Meteorologists said the combination of high temperatures and moisture-laden winds is likely to keep heat and humidity levels elevated over the next 24 hours.

Light rainfall recorded in parts of the city

Several areas of Mumbai received light rainfall over the past day, although precipitation levels remained limited.

The showers were not widespread enough to significantly lower temperatures or humidity levels. However, cloud cover associated with the rain activity helped moderate daytime heating in some pockets of the city.

The IMD has indicated that isolated light showers may occur again during late evening or early morning hours, particularly in coastal and suburban areas.

Humidity expected to remain high

Despite the possibility of rain, residents are likely to continue experiencing warm and muggy weather conditions.

Meteorologists have advised people to stay hydrated and avoid prolonged exposure to the sun during peak afternoon hours. Localised thunderstorm activity cannot be ruled out, especially during the evening when atmospheric instability may increase.

Officials have also advised citizens to remain alert for sudden weather changes, including brief spells of rain and gusty winds in isolated locations.

Mumbai air quality remains satisfactory

Even as weather conditions remain humid, Mumbai's air quality continued to stay within the "Satisfactory" category on Tuesday.

According to data from the Central Pollution Control Board's (CPCB) SAMEER application, the city's overall Air Quality Index (AQI) was recorded at 52.

An AQI between 51 and 100 is classified as satisfactory, indicating that air quality is generally acceptable and poses little or no health risk to most residents.

Monitoring stations record stable pollution levels

Air quality readings across various monitoring stations in Mumbai remained largely stable.

Bandra Kurla Complex recorded an AQI of 70, while Ghatkopar reported 68. Byculla registered an AQI of 60, and Colaba recorded 59. Navi Mumbai and Thane also remained within the satisfactory category with AQI readings of 56 and 64 respectively.

Among the city's cleaner locations, Malad recorded an AQI of 34, placing it in the "Good" air quality category. Kandivali reported an AQI of 43, while Borivali recorded 46, both of which were also close to the good category threshold.

Air quality remains stable across MMR region

The latest readings indicate that air quality has remained relatively stable not only in Mumbai but also across the wider Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR).

Environmental experts attribute the satisfactory air quality levels to favourable atmospheric conditions and periodic rainfall activity, which helps reduce the concentration of airborne pollutants.

According to CPCB guidelines, AQI values between 0 and 50 fall under the "Good" category, while readings between 51 and 100 are considered "Satisfactory". Both categories indicate minimal health concerns for the general public.

With light rain likely and humidity expected to remain high, Mumbai residents can anticipate a mix of cloudy skies, warm temperatures and occasional showers over the coming days, while air quality is expected to remain within acceptable limits.
