Mumbai weather update: Light rain, thundershowers likely across city and suburbs, says IMD

Mumbai is expected to experience a generally cloudy sky on Friday, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting occasional light to moderate rain and thundershowers across the city and suburbs.

According to the IMD, intermittent spells of rain are likely throughout the day. The maximum temperature is expected to hover around 32 degrees Celsius, while the minimum temperature may settle near 26 degrees Celsius, keeping weather conditions warm and humid.

Rainfall recorded across city

Between 8 am on July 16 and 8 am on July 17, Mumbai recorded varied rainfall across its regions. The Eastern Suburbs (ES) received the highest average rainfall at 11.34 mm, followed by the Western Suburbs (WS) at 4.64 mm, while the Island City recorded 2.90 mm.

Water stock rises to 49.79 per cent of capacity; reservoirs hold 7.20 lakh ML

Mumbai's seven lakes supplying drinking water to the city recorded a combined live storage of 7,20,597 million litres (ML) on Friday, July 17, taking the total water stock to 49.79 per cent of the system's total capacity of 14,47,363 ML, according to data released by the BMC's Hydraulic Engineer's Department at 6 am.

The city's reservoirs had recorded 80.96 per cent live storage on the corresponding day last year and 37.77 per cent in 2024.

Major lakes cross 52 per cent of combined capacity

The combined storage of Upper Vaitarna, Modak Sagar, Tansa and Middle Vaitarna stood at 3,65,765 ML, which is 52.66 per cent of their combined useful capacity of 6,94,582 ML.

Upper Vaitarna

Upper Vaitarna recorded a water level of 598.15 metres, up by 0.03 metres in the past 24 hours. The lake's live storage stood at 66,156 ML, or 29.14 per cent of its useful capacity. It received 9 mm rainfall during the day, with cumulative rainfall reaching 919 mm.

Modak Sagar

Modak Sagar witnessed a decline of 0.17 metres in water level to 159.34 metres. The reservoir contained 98,073 ML of water, equivalent to 76.07 per cent of its capacity. The lake received 12 mm rainfall, taking the season's total to 1,348 mm.

Tansa

Tansa recorded a water level of 127.01 metres, rising by 0.02 metres over the last 24 hours. Its live storage stood at 1,14,858 ML, or 79.17 per cent of capacity. The lake received 2 mm rainfall, with cumulative rainfall touching 1,427 mm.

Middle Vaitarna

Middle Vaitarna registered the highest daily rise among the major reservoirs, climbing 0.15 metres to 264.89 metres. The reservoir held 86,678 ML of water, accounting for 44.79 per cent of its capacity. It received 40 mm rainfall in the last 24 hours and has recorded 1,016 mm rainfall this monsoon.
