Mumbai: West Bengal man arrested for extortion threat to Kapil Sharma

The Mumbai Crime Branch arrested a man hailing from West Bengal for allegedly threatening comedian Kapil Sharma and demanding an extortion amount of Rs 1 crore. The accused, identified as Dilip Chaudhary, is said to have used the names of gangster Lawrence Bishnoi's associates, Rohit Godara and Goldy Brar, to intimidate Sharma.

According to officials, a case has been registered under relevant sections of the IPC, and the accused has been remanded to police custody till September 30. Officers said Chaudhary directly contacted Sharma, and warned the comedian of serious consequences if the ransom was not paid.

Between September 22 and 23, Sharma received seven threatening phone calls, along with a video threat, reportedly sent from two mobile numbers. Disturbed by the repeated threats, Sharma approached the police and filed a complaint, following which the Crime Branch launched an investigation.

Using technical analysis, officers traced the calls to West Bengal. Chaudhary was taken into custody from there, brought to Mumbai, and produced before a local court on Saturday.
