Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde has been elected vice-president of the All India Mayors' Council and will formally assume office during the organisation's 117th executive committee meeting in Rishikesh, Uttarakhand, on Wednesday.

According to a statement issued by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the two-day meeting of the executive committee will conclude on Thursday, bringing together mayors from major cities across the country as well as all mayors from Uttarakhand.

The executive committee meeting is scheduled to begin at 10 am on Wednesday and will be inaugurated by Pushkar Singh Dhami. Union Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Manohar Lal Khattar and Uttarakhand Urban Development Minister Ram Singh Kaira are also expected to address the gathering.

The All India Mayors' Council has unanimously selected Tawde as vice-president of its executive committee. The formal announcement is expected during the meeting, following which she will take charge of the post. Her tenure will be for two years.

The appointment comes shortly after Tawde assumed office as the ex-officio President of the Maharashtra Mayors' Council. Civic officials said her elevation to the national-level position reflects Mumbai's growing representation in urban local governance forums.

Ahead of the event, Tawde arrived at Dehradun airport on Tuesday. She was received by Rishikesh Municipal Council Chairman Ashu Dang and other local representatives. Expressing gratitude for the welcome, Tawde said she looked forward to participating in discussions on urban development and issues concerning local self-government institutions.

The two-day meeting is expected to focus on strengthening municipal governance and addressing developmental challenges faced by cities across the country.
