Mumbai will get upgraded infrastructure to tackle monsoon flooding, with Rs 707.71 crore approved under the Urban Flood Risk Management Programme (UFRMP). The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) cleared the funds under Phase 1. The project had received in-principle approval during the 2025 monsoon.
On March 21, mid-day reported that the BMC submitted a Rs 10,000 crore flood mitigation plan to the NDMA. Mumbai is among three megacities - along with New Delhi and Ahmedabad - selected for comprehensive flood preparedness and capacity building.
Newly appointed Municipal Commissioner Ashwini Bhide on Wednesday (April 8), inspected ongoing desilting works ahead of the monsoon. She directed officials to prioritise waterlogging-prone locations and complete desilting by May 31 with a time-bound plan.

Additional Municipal Commissioner Abhijit Bangar said, "BMC had received in-principle approval for this phase in 2025. Funds are now being disbursed. This is part of Phase 1, and work has started. The Rs 10,000 crore proposal awaits approval."
