Mumbai's first cable-stayed bridge built by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) over railway tracks is taking shape near Mahalaxmi railway station, with the civic body targeting completion of the project by December 31, 2026, an official statement said.
The bridge, being built on Keshavrao Khadye Marg, is expected to improve connectivity between Saat Rasta and Mahalaxmi Racecourse.
BMC's Additional Municipal Commissioner (Projects) Abhijit Bangar inspected the ongoing construction work on Keshavrao Khadye Marg on Thursday and issued directions to officials.
The cable-stayed bridge will be 803 metres long and 17.2 metres wide, while its width within the railway boundary will be 23.01 metres.
The project is expected to improve connectivity in the Mahalaxmi area in central Mumbai and ease movement between the two sides of the railway corridor, the statement said.
A 78.5-metre-high pylon, the large steel structure supporting the cable-stayed bridge, has already been erected.
The 95-metre-long western span from the pylon has been completed.
It said that the eastern span, measuring 165 metres, will be constructed within the railway premises after the civic body receives the required railway block to carry out the work safely over the tracks.
Most of the pillars on the western side of the pylon have been constructed. However, work on five pillars is still pending because of traffic diversion requirements.
The BMC will implement the traffic diversion after receiving permission from the Mumbai Traffic Police.
As part of the preparations, the civic body is constructing a concrete service road. Utility works are also being carried out in the area.
Once the required permissions are obtained, traffic will be moved on to the service road in coordination with the traffic police.
According to the statement, the cable-stayed bridge is being constructed under Mumbai's Development Plan and will provide a connection between Saat Rasta-Mahalaxmi, crossing the Western Railway tracks near Mahalaxmi station.
The BMC's Bridges Department has set December 31, 2026, as the target for completing the bridge, the officials said.
Chief Engineer (Bridges) Rajesh Mule and other engineers were present during Abhijit Bangar's inspection, they said.
