Balkrishna Purnekar, who is back as Thane District Congress Committee President, has vowed to work for the rout of Shiv Sena-BJP from the Mumbai-Konkan belt and ensure the party's victory in coming State Assembly polls.

Talking to reporters here last night, he said the atmosphere was conducive for Congress in Thane and Mumbai to repeat its good showing in Lok Sabha polls. Purnekar, who was unceremoniously removed from the post over two years ago over allegations of mismanagement in the civic elections here, was reinstated last night by Maharashtra PCC President Manikrao Thakre.

Purnekar said he had staged a come back to give a new lease of life to the Congress. The party had brought back the former district President and MLA Kanti Koli after a gap of 20 years and installed him as President in place of Purnekar. Purnekar said he would ensure that the booth committees are formed within the next 15 days and "you will see the Congress in action in the coming days."

He said there are different views about Congress and NCP coming together once again for the upcoming polls, but "we will abide by the decision of the party high command."
