Trap fraudsters who poses as CID cops to extort money
Quick thinking by two Dharavi residents led to the arrest of four conmen last night. The fraudsters, who were arrested at around 11 pm, would often extort money from people posing as CID officials.
As the four men, posing as cops, had already extorted Rs 13,000 from him on November 2, Mubarak Ali (33), who runs a leather bags business, smelt a rat when Akhilesh Thakur, Rashid Patel, Deepak Thackeray and Kanishk Singh showed up at his residence last evening, asking for more money.
Ali, immediately called his friend Amarjeet Barun (30), informing him that the 'CID' were back, but he found their behaviour suspicious.
After receiving the call, Barun, who has a business of aluminum goods nearby, came over and he began questioning the impersonators.
"I asked the four, which Unit they belonged to and one of them said they were from Unit II. On asking them for the location of the unit, they had no answers.
Moreover, when I asked them for their identity cards, they were baffled and said that they do not show them to the common man," said Barun.
While Barun engaged them in conversation, Ali called the police. Within minutes, cops from the nearby Shahu Nagar police station arrived at Ali's residence and nabbed the conmen.

Ali, said, "The four looted me of Rs 13,000 on Monday. Today, when they came to my house for more money I found something was fishy.
Hence, I asked Barun to come over and keep an eye on them till I informed the police."
Inspector L Donde of the Shahu Nagar police, who is the investigation officer in the case, pointed out that the four men were regular offenders and six cases had been registered against them.
"We have booked them for kidnapping, cheating and impersonating a public servant. They will be presented in Bandra court today.

Among the four arrested, Thackeray was only driving the car, so we are still investigating his involvement in the case."
First TimeAli was stopped by the four men on his way to work. Telling him that they were CID officials, they asked him to get into the car.
After questioning Ali about his business and where he stayed, they demanded Rs 25,000. When Ali refused to give them the money, they slapped him.
A scared Ali then handed over Rs 13,000, all the money he had with him, after which they let him go.
