A major fire broke out at a private college in Maharashtra's Thane district on Wednesday morning, destroying the institution's auditorium and a battery backup room. No injuries were reported in the incident, officials said.
The blaze erupted at around 6 am at the educational institute in Mira Bhayander township, Thane, according to Chief Fire Officer Prakash Borade.
"The fire broke out in the auditorium of the educational institute and spread to the battery backup room on the sixth floor. Both were completely destroyed in the blaze," Borade told PTI.
Eight fire engines and four water tankers were deployed to the spot. Firefighters battled the blaze for nearly one-and-a-half hours before bringing it under control.
Officials said the fire was contained before it could spread to other parts of the building. The timely response helped protect the institute's computer rooms and several adjoining rooms from damage.
Preliminary findings indicate that the fire may have been caused by a short circuit, although the exact cause is yet to be confirmed. Authorities are investigating the incident.
In a separate incident, a Level-I fire broke out at a commercial premises in Mumbai's Kandivali West early on Wednesday, damaging electrical installations, office equipment, stored goods and a temporary monsoon shed. No injuries were reported.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation's (BMC) Mumbai Fire Brigade received the call at 5.09 am from a property on Charkop Road, opposite Hindustan Naka, Plot No. 118/D, near Sandhya Bar.
According to the Mumbai Fire Brigade, the blaze was confined to electrical wiring, electrical installations, electric motors, iron rods, computer accessories, office furniture, office records, papers, packing machines, laser machines, pens and corrugated boxes stored in the loft area.
The fire also spread to a temporary monsoon shed in the open space, damaging tarpaulin sheets, bamboo structures, a stock of pens and an electric bike.
Officials said the affected premises measured around 5,000 square feet on each floor.
The Mumbai Fire Brigade declared the incident a Level-I fire at 5.20 am and launched firefighting operations.
The blaze was brought under control and completely extinguished at 8.35 am after more than three hours of firefighting. The cause of the fire was not immediately known.
