In a continuing spate of crimes against the elderly in the city, an 87 year-old woman was found dead and her valuables robbed from her Vile Parle (East) flat on Saturday.

Strangely, the victim, Pramila Ghody's body bore no injury marks. Police suspect she could have either been murdered, with the attacker using a pillow to suffocate her or she could have died of shock, as she suffered from a heart ailment. Her room was reportedly ransacked and valuables and cash stolen, apart from the bangles and gold chains she was wearing.

Police suspect that the robbery took place sometime late in the night, when her son Arun Ghody (68) and his wife Smita Ghody (62), were asleep in their room.

The Ghodys run a plastic lining business and reside in Shanti Apartment on Vile Parle's Park Road. According to Hasmukh Patel, Smita's brother, the family members last saw Pramila when they had dinner together and retired to their beds at 11 pm on Friday. Next morning at 7 am, Arun found the door to her room ajar. On entering, he saw his mother lying dead.

Patel estimates that around Rs 4 lakh worth of jewellery and cash has gone missing.

When contacted, Senior Inspector of Vile Parle Police Station, Narayan Patil, said, "Investigations are ongoing. Currently, we are trying to ascertain how she died and are waiting for postmortem report from Cooper Hospital."
