Two people, including an 80 year old woman, have died in a major accident involving two heavy vehicles on the Pune-Mumbai Expressway early Monday morning, officials said.
The accident occurred around 5 am near the Khalapur Food Mall when two heavy vehicles collided, causing extensive damage to both vehicles. The impact of the crash was so severe that two occupants died on the spot.
The accident led to significant traffic disruption on the busy expressway, including a near one-hour closure of the Missing Link route, which resulted in long queues of vehicles, severe congestion, and slow movement as emergency teams worked to carry out rescue and clearance operations.
A container truck, an Eicher tempo, and an Ertiga car were involved in a bizarre three-vehicle collision. The impact completely mangled the car, while the front portions of the tempo and the container truck sustained extensive damage.
Following the accident, the injured victims were rushed to a nearby hospital for immediate medical attention. They are currently undergoing treatment.
Police and highway authorities rushed to the spot and initiated efforts to remove the damaged vehicles and restore normal traffic flow. The bodies of the deceased were sent for further procedures.
Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the accident.
