Mumbai Rains: Mumbaikars welcome intense spell of rains

After the onset of monsoon in Maharashtra, Mumbai finally received spells of heavy rainfall. While water-logging was reported from a few areas, traffic disruptions did not happen in the city. Although the onset of monsoon has covered the whole of Maharashtra, Mumbai - the city that never sleep and is well known for its monsoon season is yet to receive widespread rainfall.

After an on and off mode, several places across the city, and its surrounding areas such as Thane and Navi Mumbai received an intense spell of rains on Thursday. Mumbai and its adjoining areas witnessed heavy showers accompanied by wind and thunder at some isolated places.

Private weather agency Skymet Weather said that more rains are predicted for Mumbai and its neighbouring areas in the next 24 hours. The heavy downpour on Thursday comes as a welcome relief to Mumbaikars who have been witnessing a soft onset of the monsoon this year.

While the heavy downpour led to water-logging at some places in the city, no disruption of traffic was reported from Mumbai.

While the rains were not heavy on Thursday morning, it picked up pace only post noon. KS Hosalikar, deputy director general of IMD Mumbai said that the rains picked up pace due to the circulation over the north Konkan and its neighborhood regions.

In an untoward incident, two women sustained minor injuries after a portion of a house collapsed in the Meghwadi area of Jogeshwari (East) in Mumbai, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) officials said.

As heavy rains lashed several parts of the city, citizens young and old were seen making the most of Mumbai's monsoon season. While a couple were seen feeding ducks at Aarey Colony in Goregaon, young childern and adults were seen enjoying the scenic view of the Arabian Sea in Bandra.

In another shocking incident, a portion of dilapidated four storey building collapsed at Kurla's Mehtab Lane on Thursday afternoon. The residential building was declared dilapidated by BMC last June. No loss of life or property was reported in the incident.

After heavy rains accompanied by thunderstorm and winds lashed the city and its adjoining areas, the weather agency has forecasted the showers to continue all through the weekend. The India Meteorological Department said that parts of Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg and Mumbai will receive heavy rains over the weekend.

Guess who was making the most of Mumbai's Rains? India's cricket captain Virat Kohli who lives in Worli enjoyed the heavy showers of spell. Taking to Twitter Kohli wrote, "Great weather in Mumbai. Sitting out enjoying the beginning of my first proper experience of Mumbai monsoon. Couldn't be a better time to start reading something.
