Twenty years on, heavy showers stirred fears of a 2005 Mumbai deluge déjà vu — but stopped short

Mumbai received heavy showers on Saturday, bringing back haunting memories of the July 26 deluge, 20 years on. However, as the day progressed, the intensity of the rain eased, and no major rain-related incidents were reported. According to the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS), high tidal waves ranging from 4.2 to 4.7 metres are expected until July 28 across Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, Raigad, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg

Amid these conditions, the fisherfolk and small boat operators have been cautioned against venturing into the sea

On Saturday, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an orange alert for state capital Mumbai and its neighbouring district of Thane, warning of “heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places”

Till 10 pm on Saturday, the Island City recorded an average rainfall of 6.8 mm, while the eastern and suburbs and western suburbs received 11.53 mm and 7.42 mm of rain, respectively

In 24 hours, Mumbai received 97.2 mm of rainfall, followed by Thane (85 mm), Gadchiroli (57.6 mm), Gondia (54.6 mm), and Raigad (53.5 mm)

For Sunday, the weather bureau has issued a yellow alert, predicting heavy rainfall for both Mumbai and Thane

As heavy rain lashed the city, tree falls were reported from 27 locations and there were five instances of partial house collapses. However, no injuries have been reported in these incidents

As a precautionary measure, the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams have been deployed in some districts. A total of 18 NDRF teams and six SDRF teams have been pre-positioned across the state, including in Mumbai, Thane, and Raigad. PIC/ASHISH RAJE

As the showers subsided, the weekend crowd thronged Marine Drive to enjoy the Mumbai's monsoon magic

Several other districts of the state have also received heavy to extremely heavy rainfall, prompting multiple alerts by authorities

Mumbai's neighbouring district Palghar has been put on red alert as heavy showers have claimed the lives of four people so far
